ABBEY HILL RALLY 2013
Report and photos by Nick Aplin
The 33rd ABBEY HILL STEAM RALLY is probably the biggest rally in our area to start off the season, well as usual it didn't disappoint as the rally sections were all full to capacity for this four day rally held at the Yeovil Showground. This rally started in a very small way back in 1980 and has been held on this site since 1983. The weather proved to be kind and this made for a really good weekend for all the enthusiasts and general public to enjoy this long established rally.
Over 25 large Steam engines and equally the same amount of Miniature engines were to be seen and enjoyed, some making their first appearance at this event, including a 1931 Fowler Showman's conversion, ' Royal Sovereign ' all the way from Worcester. Another first appearance was a 1910 Garrett Traction Engine ' Earl of Eldon '.
To entertain the children was the recently refurbished Helter Skelter of Chipperfields and of course the Dodgems are always a hit at these events. This year there were more stalls and the Tractor section was even bigger than last year with well over 150 in attendance. Parades of vehicles took place in the main ring all day and provided great entertainment for the thousands of people who sat around and watched while enjoying their chips and drinks !
Members of TOY were well represented over the four days, some staying up there, this included Len & Milly Watts with their lorries and Steam engine. Day visitors included Mike Nicholls and James with the Jaguar, Will & Nick Aplin with the 1960 Hillman Minx, Dave & Sally Williams, Brent & Sue Gillard, Mike & Sue Mills plus many other members with their vehicles. A great weekend and here are a few.

TOY DRIVE IT DAY TO WEST BAY 14th APRIL
The first day out in the classics this year was a cold and rainy affair unlike last year when the weather was much better , but around 20 members risked getting their pride and joys wet and drove to West Bay in Dorset to assemble for the boot sale.
This years static display at Hive Beach was cancelled due to the cold and muddy conditions on the display field. Nikki gave her Reliant Robin 3 wheeler an outing for the first time and Martin and Carle drove a beautiful un-restored Nissan micra, but the prize for bravery has to go to the driver of the open top Morgan 3 wheeler.

MARCH CLUB MEETING 5th March
Carle and Mike
The March meeting was held on an unseasonally warm day for the time of year and large number of members attended.
Members were in for a real treat as a former Chef and crew member of the Royal Yacht Britannia told us about life aboard the famous vessel, As he spoke the room fell silent as members listened intently to the fascinating talk.
Our thanks to Mike for a very enlightening talk.

THE 15th GILLINGHAM GATHERING (A freezing cold Nick Aplin brings you this report)
The 15th Annual Gillingham GATHERING took place on Sunday 24th February on a dry but very cold day. Although mainly a Commercial vehicle event, there were a number of other interesting exhibits to be seen including 4 steam vehicles, two tractors and even three stationary engines ! A regular supporter was John Todd with his 1967 Winget Dumper which he had drove a few miles to be at the event.
TOY members were out in force and it was nice to see Geoff Cole with his Chevy Pick Up, Roy Halsal with his Military Chevy. Peter & Jean Horseley gave their Morris Minor an early season run out and were joined by Kevin and Jill Andrews in their MGB. Len Watts brought along his Steam engine ' Miss Jodie Brown ' and was soon in steam and was driving around !
The usual excellent refreshments in the garage of Nick Baker's was a welcome retreat ! Jim Gerrad from Bournemouth brought along his display of model mamrod engines which was housed in one of the garages. It was a good opportunity for many organisers to distribute entry forms for various shows and rallies. Without counting the amount of vehicles present I would think there was in the region of 50 - 60 vehicles in total. Before we know it we will be at this event again !!

I heard nothing but praise from our members, who were treated to excellent service and superb food. Yet another most enjoyable social TOY. Club event. See the full report in your "TOY TIMES".

TOY VISIT TO WEYMOUTH FIRE STATION
We arrived a little earlier than scheduled ,and we were warmly welcomed by the the Community Safety Education Officer Dave Allen of the Firewise unit Dorset Fire and Rescue Service.
We were first shown a film outlining the main causes of fires and the dramatic and often tragic consequences that follow. Dave then took us through a purpose built unit containing most rooms of the house and the things that you should not do all illustrated with smoke and explosions to drive home to us just how important it is to prevent fire.
We moved onto another demonstration, where David set fire to a lounge sofa, and showed us a chip pan on fire, these were shown on fire in an enclosed room,he then opened a door and showed us how the fire and heat doubles the moment you open a door. The lesson being if you have a fire in a room, get out and close the door, and call the Fire Service. David then took us on a tour of their newest Fire Engine showing us the huge amount of kit that they carry, and what it is used for when called to a fire or incident.
A most interesting and informative evening which we all enjoyed. I thanked Dave very much on behalf of our club. This man is committed and totally passionate to educate everyone on fire safety.
I thoroughly recommend all local organisations to get in touch with Dave and organise a visit
Many thanks David.

THE GREAT DORSET STEAM FAIR 2012
The 44th Great Dorset Steam Fair got under way to very poor weather conditions on their opening day on Wednesday 29th August. However things did improve on the Thursday when it dried a bit and the Main heavy haulage ring managed to move a few vehicles around by mid afternoon. There were no ring parades on Wednesday or Thursday for the Cars and other vehicles because of the ground conditions.
Several TOY members were exhibiting over the 5 days which included Len & milly Watts with their 1947 Austin K4 lorry and their Miniature Steam Engine, Gill Essom and Graham with their Classic car and caravan, plus others who visited on a daily basis like Will & Nick Aplin, Andy Collier, Ted Palmer, John Parkes and others. On the Friday the ground was a lot better and ring parades were back on plus the ' Play Pen ' was full of Steam and Diesel vehicles all day which pleased the thousands of people who attended. Here are a few pictures of my visit.

MELPASH SHOW 23rd AUGUST
Following a two year break, our Club was invited back to the MELPLASH Annual Show at West Bay,Nr.Bridport.
This is a one day Agricultural show that has been held for many, many years. from the many Farm Animals,to the Equestrian events and the popular Dog Show all competing in their respective classes,to the hundreds of trade stalls, and the food Hall with many locally produced foods it really is a Show not to be missed.
Our Club members and their cars had a very early start, and we all met at around 7.30am leaving at 7.45am for a pleasant drive on a very nice morning along the B3157 coast road via Abbotsbury ,Swyre and Burton Bradstock arriving at the West Bay Show Ground at around 8.20am.
We were very efficiently directed by a marshall to our display area which was situated near the main public entrance. We soon hoisted the TOY Club flag and by 9am thousands of people were arriving and our cars were surrounded by a sea of people enthusiastically viewing the cars and chatting to us owners asking questions and telling us of their experiences when they "owned one of those".
All in all a very nice Show, and a great day out for everyone.
We had 14 cars on display and one motor cycle. We all had a great time at Melplash Show, and once again Transport Of Yesteryear provided an excellent and interesting display of vehicles.
Well done to all.

BUCKHAM FAIR 19th AUGUST
This years TOY club run to Buckham Fair was more interesting than usual as the Beaminster tunnel was closed following a recent landslide. A diversion was put in place and the AA stepped in to show us the way . After an eventful journey we reached Buckham Fair to find over 30 members and their vehicles parked on display amongst some of the most beautiful scenery in Dorset.
Martin Clunes welcomed us to the Fair and some very helpful visitors kindly gave Pogo a push as the little car got stuck in the soft ground . Members enjoyed the lovely hot weather and talking to visitors about the vehicles.
As always Buckham Fair was a great success and Julia’s House Children’s Hospice will be able to carry on its vital work thanks to the funds raised from the annual event.

Organiser Mark Kirby said ' it was another good evening ' but had expected a few more on such a nice evening. The last meet this year takes place in September.
